Zurich to Interlaken by Train: Bern or Lucerne Route?
There are two useful ways to plan Zurich to Interlaken by train: compare practical connections towards Bern with a scenic itinerary through Lucerne and the Brünig route. Start by deciding whether you want the quickest suitable journey or time on the Luzern–Interlaken Express, then search for the station closest to your final destination.
Compare the complete route via Bern
Search Zürich HB to Interlaken Ost or Interlaken West for your actual date. Journeys on the Bern corridor can involve different stopping patterns and transfer arrangements. The current itinerary tells you whether you remain on one train or change along the way.
Compare total journey duration and transfer time, not just the first departure. If you have large bags or need lifts, a more generous connection can be worth considering. Use live platform information at the interchange.
Choose the Lucerne route deliberately
If you want the Brünig scenery, add Luzern as a via point or plan Zürich HB–Luzern and Luzern–Interlaken Ost as explicit stages. Otherwise a journey planner may offer a different route because it is faster for the selected time.
The Luzern–Interlaken Express crosses the Brünig route and runs via Meiringen and Brienz. Zentralbahn gives a regular journey time of about 1 hour 50 minutes for this stage alone. Add the Zurich–Lucerne journey and connection time when comparing it with other routes.
Decide between Interlaken Ost and West
Choose Interlaken Ost for many onward journeys into the Jungfrau region. Interlaken West may suit accommodation closer to the western part of town. Look up the address and stopping pattern before buying.
The Luzern–Interlaken Express arrives at Ost. A hotel near West may need another short transport stage or a walk. An onward journey to Lauterbrunnen, Grindelwald or a mountain destination should be checked as a complete itinerary, including additional fares.
Route validity, reservations and passes
Check whether a point-to-point ticket specifies a route or via station. A ticket priced for one corridor should not be assumed valid on a scenic alternative. With a pass, inspect network coverage and the applicable travel day.

Starting at Zurich Airport
If arriving by air, search from Zürich Flughafen instead of Zürich HB. Compare the full airport-to-Interlaken journey and leave time for airport formalities. A city-origin ticket omits the first part of the trip.
For a scenic arrival day, consider whether you will still have daylight and enough energy after the flight. An overnight stay in Lucerne can make the next stage more comfortable than rushing through both routes with a tight connection.
