At a glance: Bern–Interlaken trains run via Thun and Spiez. First choose whether you need Interlaken West or Interlaken Ost. Use a dated timetable search for the precise journey time, stopping pattern and any connection.

Choose the right Interlaken station

Interlaken West and Interlaken Ost are different stations. Choose the station closest to your accommodation if Interlaken is your final destination. Check the hotel's address and onward walking or bus route before booking; a hotel described as central may be more convenient from one station than the other.

Interlaken Ost is the interchange to check for onward trains towards Lauterbrunnen, Grindelwald and the Lucerne direction. If your journey continues into the mountains, search to the actual final station and review every transfer. A ticket ending at Interlaken does not automatically cover the mountain railway or cable car you intend to take next.

Our Interlaken Ost versus West guide helps you make this choice. Keep the selected station consistent in your outward ticket, return ticket and hotel transfer plan.

Route, direct services and timing

SBB lists direct services from Bern towards Interlaken Ost via Thun and Spiez under IC61, IC81 and, on some departures, ICE. The route information is a service overview, not a dated departure list. Some searches may also offer journeys with a change, so open the connection details before choosing.

Plan roughly an hour for a fast direct trip, then use the timetable for your exact stations and departure. Interlaken West is reached before Interlaken Ost when arriving from Bern. Do not treat one journey time as applying to both stations, every stopping service and every day.

The Interlaken tourism arrival page also carries railway-work information. Evening and late-night journeys particularly merit a fresh check because works can affect the final section between Spiez and Interlaken. Save the connection details, then check for changes again before leaving.

Lake views and stopovers

The journey approaches the Interlaken area beside Lake Thun after Spiez. Views depend on the route, direction, carriage and available seat; scenery is not a reason to assume a particular seat will be free. Keep bags out of adjacent seats and follow any reservation indications.

If you want to stop in Thun or Spiez, plan the break before purchasing. Check that your chosen ticket permits the itinerary and the later train you intend to board. A train-specific offer should not be treated as an unrestricted hop-on, hop-off ticket.

Tickets, discounts and onward coverage

Compare the total fare and restrictions for your date, class and passengers. There is no fixed route price quoted here: discount entitlement and the available ticket product can change the amount. Enter a Half Fare or other reduction only if the passenger holds the matching valid entitlement.

SBB's regular Point-to-Point and Supersaver products have different connection restrictions. When booking through any seller, read the actual offer's validity, change and refund terms. A low displayed price alone does not tell you whether you can switch departure times.

If you already have a travel pass, check the coverage map and conditions for each onward leg. Coverage to Interlaken and coverage for a mountain excursion are separate questions. Reservations, where needed, may also be separate from the ticket or pass.

Boarding in Bern and planning the return

Search from Bern, then check the current departure track at the station. Follow temporary signs during construction and leave room for collecting luggage or using lifts. For help with the layout, see the Bern station guide.

For a day trip, choose a realistic return connection before setting out, including the journey back from your mountain destination. Check the last useful services for the actual date instead of assuming the evening frequency matches the daytime pattern.
