Zurich HB Station Guide: Platforms, Transfers & Luggage

Illustration: a planning schematic, not a photograph or a geographical map. The diagram highlights the subject of this guide; it does not guarantee a specific train, stop, connection or ticket inclusion.
At a glance: Zürich HB is Zurich's main railway station. Its platforms are spread across several levels, so check the current track and follow numbered signs. Allow a transfer that suits your luggage and mobility, rather than assuming one walking time fits every connection.
Search for the right station
Zürich HB means the main station. It is different from Zürich Flughafen at the airport and from other city stations such as Zürich Oerlikon or Zürich Stadelhofen. Check the full station name on both your itinerary and ticket, especially when arriving after a flight.
If you are changing trains, search through to your final destination before choosing a connection. This makes the proposed interchange visible and helps you avoid combining two unrelated tickets with an impractical gap. International trains may have reservation or boarding conditions different from a domestic local service.
Understand the platform levels
The official SBB plan is the most useful starting point. The main hall and surface terminus tracks are only part of the station. Underground areas include the Löwenstrasse tracks 31–34 and Museumstrasse tracks 41–44; there is also a separate SZU railway area. Follow your exact track number instead of assuming all regional trains are downstairs or all long-distance trains are on the surface.
On signs, Gleis means track and Ausgang means exit. Match the departure time, destination and train number on the board, then follow the signs to the platform. Recheck the display once there, because operational changes can alter a track assignment.
Keep the station map accessible on your phone. If you are unsure, pause in a clear area and ask station staff rather than following another group whose destination may be different. A meeting point should name a recognisable place or sign, not simply “the station entrance”.
Plan a transfer that works for you
Walking time varies with the arrival coach, platform level, lift route and crowds. A published timetable connection is a starting point for planning; if you travel slowly, with children or several bags, choose a longer interchange. Add time separately for shopping, collecting stored luggage or meeting someone.
SBB provides information about lift and escalator disruptions from its station page. For step-free travel or boarding assistance, check the accessibility information for the specific connection and contact the operator ahead of time. The minimum connection in a journey planner may not suit every mobility need.
Luggage storage, shops and services
Zurich HB has luggage lockers and extensive shops and services in the station complex, including ShopVille. Locate the storage area on the current map before leaving your bags. Locker sizes, charging periods, payment methods and availability vary, so check the machine and the official listing instead of budgeting for a single flat daily price.
Leave enough time to retrieve luggage and return to your departure track. Do not count on finding an empty locker at the last minute, and check another storage arrangement if your bag is too large. For a staffed service, check its own opening and collection hours.
Service and shop hours differ. Locate a ticket office, toilets or a food outlet before joining a queue if your connection is short. Station WiFi may help you check the timetable, but download your issued ticket in advance so boarding does not depend on connectivity.
Airport trains and city exits
For an airport departure, search to Zürich Flughafen and check the actual service and track. Allow time at the airport for the terminal walk, check-in and security in addition to the rail journey. A train arrival time is not an airport boarding time.
The station plan identifies exits towards Bahnhofplatz, Bahnhofstrasse, Landesmuseum, Europaallee and Sihlquai. Choose the exit closest to your hotel or onward stop. Tram stops around the station have different names, and works can change access; use current local transport information.
For onward trips, see our Zurich–Bern guide and Zurich–Lugano guide. Verify your selected ticket's route, class and conditions before travelling.
