Zurich to Bern by Train: Direct Routes, Tickets & Arrival

Illustration: a planning schematic, not a photograph or a geographical map. The diagram highlights the subject of this guide; it does not guarantee a specific train, stop, connection or ticket inclusion.
At a glance: Direct trains link Zürich HB and Bern in roughly an hour on the faster services. Choose your travel date to confirm the duration, departure station and fare. A train ticket and a reserved seat are separate things.
Choose Zürich HB or Zürich Flughafen
For a city-centre departure, search for Zürich HB, Zurich's main station. If you are landing at the airport, search from Zürich Flughafen instead. Starting the search at the airport lets you compare direct airport services and connections without accidentally buying a ticket that begins only at the main station.
Allow for immigration, baggage collection and finding the airport railway station before selecting a departure after a flight. A very short advertised rail journey does not include those steps. If your flight arrival is uncertain, consider whether a train-specific fare gives you enough flexibility.
Direct trains and journey times
SBB's route information lists IC1, IC8 and IC81 among the direct InterCity services between Zürich HB and Bern. Other direct services can take longer or follow a different stopping pattern. Compare the actual arrival time and number of changes in the timetable, rather than choosing only by the train's name.
Bern's official tourism service describes the fast direct connection with Zurich as around an hour. This is a useful planning estimate, not a promise that every departure takes exactly the same number of minutes. Engineering work, evening services and timetable changes can alter the journey. Recheck your selected departure close to travel.
You can start with the Zurich–Bern route page. Confirm the stations, travel date and passenger details in the returned offer before paying.
Compare fare conditions before the price
The fare depends on the offer, travel class and any valid discount entitlement. This guide does not quote a fixed price or assume a reduced fare is available. Check the total for every passenger and only select a travelcard discount when the traveller holds the required valid card.
SBB distinguishes regular Point-to-Point Tickets, usable on the selected route within their validity, from Supersaver Tickets tied to the chosen connection. Read the conditions of the ticket actually offered by your seller, including changes and refunds; a service search is not confirmation of those conditions.
If you already hold a pass, check its validity for the route, date and class before buying an additional ticket. The ticket or pass determines travel entitlement. A seat reservation, where available, is a separate service and should not be assumed to be included with every purchase.
Boarding and travelling comfortably
At Zürich HB, check the departure board for the current track and follow the signs to that track. The station has several levels, so do not rely on a platform number copied from an old guide. Keep your issued ticket available for inspection and carry any identification or discount card required by its conditions.
Check the timetable's service icons if onboard connectivity or catering matters. SBB FreeSurf uses mobile connectivity and the FreeSurf app on supported services; it is different from station WiFi. Do not assume every train has an onboard network called SBB Free WiFi, or that every mobile subscription qualifies for FreeSurf.
Arriving and changing trains in Bern
Use Bern as the main station in your search. For a connecting journey, search through to your final destination so the itinerary includes the transfer. Bern station is being expanded, and access routes can change. Follow the current signs and allow extra time if you need lifts, have heavy bags or want to collect food before continuing.
Our Bern station guide explains the main underpass, the Welle exit and the separate regional railway area. Choose your exit according to your hotel or onward transport, rather than simply following the largest crowd.
