Swiss Panoramic Trains: Reservations, Passes & Booking Checklist

Illustration: a planning schematic, not a photograph or a geographical map. The diagram highlights the subject of this guide; it does not guarantee a specific train, stop, connection or ticket inclusion.

For a panoramic train, check three things independently: whether the train operates on your date, whether your ticket or pass covers the route and class, and whether a separate seat reservation is required. Paying for one does not prove that all three are satisfied.

Reservation requirements by service

ServiceWhat to check
Glacier ExpressCompulsory reservation plus a valid ticket or accepted pass
Bernina Express panoramic carriagesCompulsory reservation plus valid transport entitlement
GoldenPass ExpressRecommended in first/second class; compulsory in Prestige
Gotthard Panorama ExpressCompulsory reservation and the required class entitlement; check the boat separately
Luzern–Interlaken ExpressCheck reservation availability and separate group requirements

Group rules can differ from individual travel. A “reservation possible” symbol is different from “reservation compulsory”; open the detailed journey information if unsure.

Use a pass correctly

A pass may cover the train fare while leaving a reservation, supplement or upgrade to pay. Match the pass class and validity date to the departure. For Flex products, follow the activation instructions for the selected day. Child transport benefits and child-seat reservations also need separate checks.

During booking, select the pass or discount card you actually hold. Do not claim a discount solely because a travel companion has the card. Keep the supporting document available for inspection.

Check the calendar before hotels

Panoramic trains do not share one operating season or booking window. For 2026, Glacier Express lists an autumn break from 11 October through 4 December; the Gotthard Panorama Express season ends on 18 October. RhB also lists a late-October/November diversion for selected Bernina Express trains.

Use the Glacier Express, Bernina Express and GoldenPass Express guides for specific planning. Recheck the operator’s dated notice shortly before travel.

Price the complete booking

  1. Choose the actual route, date, class and travelers.
  2. Apply only valid passes or discount cards.
  3. Read the reservation or supplement charge separately from the fare.
  4. Add any selected meals and connecting transport.
  5. Review cancellation conditions for each service before payment.

Do not rely on a single “average reservation price” for every train and season. A first-class ticket does not include premium packages such as Glacier Express Excellence or GoldenPass Prestige. The Glacier Bar is part of the Excellence offering; an ordinary first-class ticket should not be presented as a way to obtain that access.

Meals, luggage, pets and assistance

Check whether food is included, optional or available only by pre-order. Review the menu and any dietary requirements directly with the operator before committing to a long journey.

Luggage storage and equipment rules differ. For example, the Glacier Express excludes ordinary pets and certain oversized or sports items, while the Bernina Express prohibits self-service bicycle carriage. An ordinary Swiss-train rule is not enough to establish permission on a special panoramic service.

Accessible seating and assistance may require direct booking through the operator. Confirm the train, station and any connecting boat or bus together. Do not promise one universal 24-hour notice period.

Final check before departure

Confirm the issued ticket, reservation, coach, seat, boarding station and date. Save the documents offline. Arrive with time to store luggage safely and ask staff if disruption affects your booked service. For a more flexible route with intermediate stops, compare ordinary trains, but check their actual connections and facilities.

Official sources and update note

Facts checked on 11 October 2026. Timetables, fares, availability and conditions may change; verify the selected travel date before purchase.
