Swiss Half Fare Card vs Swiss Travel Pass: How to Choose

The visitor Swiss Half Fare Card gives discounts on eligible tickets, which you still buy; the Swiss Travel Pass provides travel on covered services during its valid travel days. Add card or pass cost, remaining fares and required extras not already included. Check eligibility, class, coverage and the chosen pass version. The Swiss Half Fare Card and Swiss Travel Pass solve different travel problems. The Half Fare Card provides a discount entitlement for eligible journeys, so you still buy tickets. The Swiss Travel Pass provides travel on its included network during its valid travel days. The better choice depends on your actual itinerary, not a universal number of train rides.

What you buy with each product

The visitor Swiss Half Fare Card is valid for one month and offers half-price or reduced-price travel on eligible services. Switzerland Travel Centre states that it is for people resident outside Switzerland and Liechtenstein. Add its purchase cost to the discounted tickets you expect to use, and check the current coverage map. Do not confuse it with a domestic subscription product that has different terms.

With the Swiss Travel Pass, check the chosen version, travel days, class and coverage map. Consecutive-day and flexible-day products use travel days differently. Do not assume a day outside the product’s validity is covered because part of your holiday falls inside it.

Build a fair cost comparison

List every planned intercity trip, local transport day and mountain excursion. Price the same class, ages and travel dates under each option. Compare three totals: ordinary tickets alone; the Half Fare Card plus remaining ticket costs; and the Travel Pass plus any uncovered journeys and reservations.

For example, a stay based in Lucerne with one long excursion can produce a different answer from a trip changing cities on most days. A discounted advance fare can also change the comparison, provided you can accept its restrictions.

Mountain railways and scenic trains need separate checks

A pass covering the train to Interlaken or Zermatt does not by itself prove full coverage of a mountain railway or cable car beyond the town. Check the operator’s current product-specific reduction and coverage rules for each excursion.

A scenic train can require a seat reservation in addition to the travel entitlement. Verify the exact service: rules for the Glacier Express, Bernina Express, GoldenPass Express and ordinary regional trains are not interchangeable. Add required extras to your cost comparison.

Flexibility, children and class

For weather-dependent mountain days, compare the value of flexible travel with the saving on a fixed itinerary. If you move a travel day, check whether your pass version permits that change and whether any reserved service needs separate amendment.

Enter each child’s age and accompanying adult details when checking family products. Eligibility depends on the specific offer. Also keep class consistent: a second-class pass or ticket does not automatically permit travel in first class.

A practical decision checklist

Choose the option with the lowest relevant total if your dates and journeys are fixed. If totals are close, consider the convenience of fewer individual purchases, the possibility of changing plans and the ticket restrictions you are comfortable accepting.

Before purchase, recheck product eligibility, current price, validity, network coverage and refund conditions with the issuer. SwissRail route guides help with itinerary planning; availability of a guide is not a promise that SwissRail sells the named pass or discount card.
